Micron Diamond Abrasive Particles, Precision Engineering
Micron+
Element Six can offer a complete range of micron powders in synthetic or natural diamond and cubic boron nitride within its Micron+ series. The range is precision graded and have been produced in accordance with ISO 9000 standards.
The Micron+ range is available in the form of bonded products or as powder for finish grinding, lapping, polishing and precision cutting operations, particularly those requiring dimensional accuracy and fine surface finish
Product Range:
Micron+MDA is a product series that comes in 12 different size bands. Individual particles in this series are blocky and are irregularly shaped to ensure excellent abrasive action and enhanced performance.
Micron+SND
Processed from natural diamond particles, this product series consists of uniformly shapes and blocky particles with sharp cutting edges that facture along the cleavage planes. This leads to continuous regeneration of the cutting edges. In turn, this contributes to a free-cutting action in machine applications employing both bonded tools and loose powder. This series is available in 10 different variations.
Micron+CDA
This is a precisely graded powder produced from friable resin bond diamond particles. The produces consists uniformly of irregular shaped and blocky crystals that are friable. They provide an alternative to Micron+MDA in those applications where a good free-cutting action is required.
Coated Variations
For bonded abrasives, coated particles can offer superior performance. Two coated versions are available, Micron+CDA50C that is a clad in copper to 50% by weight. In addition there is Micron+CDA55N which is a clad to 55% by weight with nickel. Not products are available in 11 size versions down to 6-12 microns.
Micron+ GDAU is a natural diamond product available in nine sizes. This product meets the need of fast stock removal, rough dimensional finishing/grinding, general finishing/lapping and final polishing.
Micron+ ABN is derived from cubic boron nitride and consists of irregular shaped particles carefully graded into discrete size ranges. It is ideally suited for grinding, lapping and fine finishing of hard ferrous materials. It is also available as a nickel cladded product, Micron+ABN60N in size ranges down to 6-12 micron for use in resin bond applications.

Based on its long experience in the processing of industrial diamond, Element Six has developed dedicated and proprietary methods for micronising. The use of these methods, coupled with strict quality control procedures, guarantees that all Micron+ products conform to or exceed industry standards. Technical quantitative results are available to customers on request.
Size Distribution is an important aspect of micron products. Element Six imposes controls on the size distribution and the single maximum particle size present in each batch. Material is analysed using optical and scanning electron microscopy and also laser diffraction. Element Six chooses the longest single dimension method for optical sizing, oversize particles etc. This allows for the determination of average mean particle size and maximum particle size. Variations in average mean particle size can lead to different cutting characteristics, and the presence of oversized particles can cause unwanted scratches to the surface of the workpiece, particularly in ultra-high precision areas such as lens grinding.
Element Six has the ability to control the size distributions of its micron products to strict specifications, thereby providing a consistent and accurately-graded product to the customer. This means that, in addition to the standard sizes available, sizes can be tailored to suit specific customer requests.
Element Six Micron+ powders are designed to have sharp, blocky, slightly irregular crystals for optimal material removal, whilst providing long tool life. Control of the surface chemistry is important in bonded tool manufacture, and proprietary cleaning methods are employed to remove contamination and ensure the product conforms to the most stringent specifications. Statistical Process Control systems are used to monitor all aspects of manufacture, thus ensuring close tolerance on particle size distribution and consistent shape characteristics.
