Industrial Diamond Conference in Rome Emphasises Breadth of Element Six Expertise

The second successful Diamond at Work Conference took place in Rome with a record number of attendees and papers, signaling the growing interest in the application of diamond across a broad range of industrial applications. In total, more than 350 delegates form 51 countries attended the event and listened to more than 90 separate papers. Aidan Spooner, one of the directors of the Diamond at Work pointed out the importance of the conference in creating a wider global appreciation of industrial diamond and its commercial potential. He says, “We have only really scratched the surface” of the material’s potential and that the Diamond at Work conference was aimed to be a “global focus point for current and future investors.”

“The Diamond at Work Conference has proved to be an important forum for sharing information about current and future uses of diamond-based materials,” says Christian Hultner, CEO of E6. “For E6, attending the conference has enabled the company to demonstrate the breadth of activities in which we are involved from telecommunications and electronics to our traditional stronghold in the superabrasives technology field.”

Element Six engineers and researchers have made a significant contribution to the Industrial Diamond Conference held in Rome in mid-April. In total eight papers were given by E6 staff on a range of topics that spanned the broad range of the company’s interests from the latest methods of characterising diamond abrasive grits for grinding applications to the development of synthetic diamond for X-ray research applications and diamond’s potential role in more futuristic quantum computing.

From the E6 perspective, there were a number of highlights. The papers reflected the company’s expertise in materials processing and its wider end use applications such as within cutting tools for machining the increasingly sophisticated materials used in industry such as metal matrix components, for example.  Diamond Microwave Devices, the E6 subsidiary set up in December 2007, shared a paper on the topic of the application of CVD diamond MESFETs, transistors that could be important in advanced  telecommunications. Future research into materials of all types will rely on developments in synchrotron radiation currently underway. Synthetic diamond will be used in a number of applications such as part of the X-ray optics to guide the beams to their target.
