Research Facilities

Element Six

Element Six has three main research facilities coupled with a Market Support Centre. The Diamond Research Laboratory based at Springs, South Africa is one of the leading facilities for research into all types of diamond material. Founded in 1947, the laboratory is an important centre for research into diamond synthesis based on high pressure high temperature processes and the development of novel diamond-based and other supermaterials for the broad range of industrial applications now served by Element Six’s businesses.

Element Six set up its second research facility in the UK in 1988. Based at Ascot, this laboratory is now one of the world’s leading research centres in the development of diamond synthesis using a process called chemical vapour deposition or CVD. The ability to make diamond material using this process has been important to the development of innovative applications. CVD diamond can be produced in novel shapes and with carefully engineered properties that open up applications in electronics, medicine, and consumer products.

In Germany, Element Six’s Hard Materials business also has comprehensive research facilities into the applications of another key supermaterial, tungsten carbide. This research facility concentrates on the application of this material as well as providing technical support to customers.
