Cold planing
Cold planing is the controlled removal of existing asphalt or concrete layers from roads, runways and other asphalt and concrete environments. Machines known as cold planers or cold milling machines are used to plane or mill the road to a required depth and / or cross slope. These machines vary in width from 0.35m up to and beyond 2.2m. The asphalt is cut via a rotating drum of road planing picks, with the material cut from the road loaded directly onto a lorry and taken away for recycling. This material is later re-used to lay new roads, which is both an economical and environmentally-friendly way to rejuvenate road infrastructure.

Our road planing pick solutions
Through close co-operation between our engineers, our research department and our customers, a range of tools specific for road planing has been developed.

Our picks are available in our standard tungsten carbide grade (B15N) and in our MasterGrade® (B15MN). Our standard range “T-Series” and our premium range of MasterGrade® “M-Series” picks are suitable for all cold milling machines in the marketplace, ranging from the small to the high powered machines.

Utilising nano-technology, Element Six MasterGrade® M-Series picks offer customers the opportunity to plane more road at less cost. Long-term test results show that our MasterGrade® picks have up to 50% greater life expectancy compared to standard picks on the market.
