Unlocking value through partnership and collaboration
Through innovation, Element Six explores and develops novel applications and markets for our synthetic diamond, cubic boron nitride and tungsten carbide–based family of materials. The result - proprietary products that unlock value for our customers and end users. Our approach to innovation has a firm base in our world class R&D capabilities. We utilise the creative input and technical and marketing insight available across our entire organisation. An important part of our approach to innovation includes partnering with specialised research institutes, customers and end users. For example, we have strong enduring partnerships with world renowned academic institutions and third parties including the University of Warwick, Harvard University and the University of Witwatersrand. Our project collaborations also include the European Union funded-EQUIND programme, DIAMANT and MORGaN projects.

These innovation collaborations aim to unlock the value inherent in the unique properties of the full range of our synthetic diamond, cubic boron nitride and tungsten carbide–based materials, and we protect this value with a strong patent portfolio.

Meeting tomorrow’s challenges today
Our vision for innovation is supported by an annual R&D investment commitment of over 7% of turnover, with over 200 employees around the world actively participating in innovation projects.

We own about 590 granted patents and 850 pending patent applications worldwide, covering all our businesses, with about 50 new inventions being protected each year.

We never stop the process of identifying smart solutions which deliver the extreme performance our customers seek. Recent demonstrations of our innovative capabilities include:

  • Commercialisation of silicon cemented diamond (SCD) - a new type of 3D composite material which offers customers a versatile and cost effective superhard material option not previously accessible.
  • Synthetic diamond road picks developed by Element Six last up to 40 times longer than standard road picks, reducing operating costs and increasing productivity for our road construction customers.
  • ABN900, the latest in a line of CBN (cubic boron nitride) products, tailored for single layer tool applications, has been proven in tests to extend tool life by up to 55%.
  • Element Six Technologies designs and builds synthetic diamond-based electrochemical reactors for the treatment of a wide range of industrial wastewaters and landfill leachates.
