Serdar Ozbayraktar, Head of Core Research and Development
Serdar joined Element Six in 1991 as a research scientist at the Diamond Research Laboratory (DRL) in Johannesburg, South Africa after completing his PhD in Materials Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand.
Between 2003 and 2013, Serdar managed the DRL which had been the world’s leading high pressure diamond research centre since its establishment in 1947 in Johannesburg.
Under Serdar’s leadership, DRL scientists and engineers carried on researching and developing world class superior diamond and related products for various applications and protecting these concepts by filing patents at a rate of 40 to 60 a year.
For the last 5 years, as Head of Core R&D, Serdar has been leading a group of scientists and engineers in designing, developing and testing novel and ground breaking material, product and manufacturing platform concepts which are potentially be generating future revenue streams for the Company.
Element Six’s leading commercial and technological position in the diamond field and its emphasis on innovation as its strategic component of its business model, provides exactly the platform Serdar needs, to put his inimitable enthusiasm and passion about anything that helps “shaping of the future of humanity” into practice.
Serdar operates from the principle that “breakthroughs will only happen in the space where ‘we do not know what we do not know’ resides” and he has not yet been let down by the variety and number of novel concepts that the team and other scientists and engineers at the GIC have designed and developed over the years.
Serdar also looks after another Element Six initiative called “Innovation Cradle” where anybody in the Company can follow up and spend time – up to 10% of their time - feasibility testing their own ideas which may not be part of mainstream projects; but they feel strongly that they can solve a problem, improve efficiencies or will have superior performance in some targeted application. This initiative, which has 40 live projects at any given time, has over the last 5 years produced some exciting concepts which were taken up by the mainstream projects.
