SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Jan. 29, 2015)—Element Six, the world leader in synthetic diamond supermaterials and member of The De Beers Group of Companies, will be presenting at the 2015 SPIE Photonics West conference, on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. PT, in San Francisco. Element Six’s Henk de Wit, general manager and business manager of optical, will host a session titled “Diamond Optical Components for High-Power and High-Energy Laser Applications.” Held at the Moscone Center, Feb. 7-12, SPIE Photonics West is the leading laser, photonics, and biomedical optics conference and will bring together laser and photonics industry leaders to discuss research, development and industry trends.
Session Topic/Code: Session 8; High Power/Energy Laser Components
Date and Time: Wednesday, Feb. 11; 4 p.m. - 5:40 p.m. PT
Location: Room 272 (Mezzanine)
Authored by Eugene Anoikin, Alexander Muhr, Andrew Bennett, Daniel J. Twitchen, and Henk de Wit, Element Six’s de Wit will speak to the high-power and high-energy performance of anti-reflection coated optical windows made of different grades of diamond (single crystal, polycrystalline) and of fused silica. High-power and high-energy laser systems have firmly established their industrial presence with applications that span materials processing—high–precision and high–throughput manufacturing, semiconductors and defense. Along with high average power CO2 lasers operating at wavelengths of ~ 10 microns, solid state lasers and fiber lasers operating at ~ 1 micron wavelength are now increasingly being used, both in the high average power and high energy pulse regimes. In recent years, polycrystalline diamond has become the material of choice when it comes to making optical components for multi-kilowatt CO2 lasers at 10 micron, outperforming ZnSe due to its superior thermo-mechanical characteristics.
