Bruce Cleaver

Chairman

Bruce became CEO of De Beers Group on 1 July 2016. He joined De Beers in 2005 and was first appointed to the Board of De Beers SA, as Commercial Director, in July 2008.

Bruce was appointed Group Director, Strategy and Business Development, for Anglo American in January 2016 (and was a Non-Executive Director on the De Beers SA Board). Previously, at De Beers, he had responsibility for strategy, corporate affairs, business development and technology.

As Executive Head of Strategy and Business Development for De Beers (2011-2015), he played a central role in shaping the direction of the business, including the development of corporate strategy, leading De Beers’ sales agreement negotiations with key governments and guiding all group mergers and acquisition activities. He led the reshaping of De Beers’ mining portfolio, creating the De Beers Technologies unit, and delivering on De Beers’ commitments to its government partners. He also led the successful relocation of Global Sightholder Sales from London to Botswana in 2013.

Bruce has been based in Johannesburg and London and has spent considerable time in Botswana, Namibia, Canada, India, Russia, the Far East and the US, so he has unique insight into the needs of De Beers’ producer partners, communities, Sightholders, downstream partners and consumers.

Before joining De Beers, he was a partner at Webber Wentzel, Africa's largest law firm, specialising in commercial matters, where he won several awards.

He is on the boards of Debswana, De Beers Consolidated Mines, Namdeb Holdings and De Beers Diamond Jewellers.

Bruce holds a BSc in applied maths and an LLB from the University of Cape Town, as well as an LLM from Cambridge.
