Sustainability at Element Six

OUR SUSTAINABILITY IMPACT

At Element Six, we:

  • Work to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, by:
    • Increasing the energy efficiency of our operations, supporting financial performance
    • Replacing fossil fuels, through fuel switching and renewable options
    • Removing residual emissions, through carbon removal projects

  • Decouple growth from resource consumption and ensure responsible waste management

  • Promote a safe, healthy, fair and inclusive environment

  • Strive to act as good citizens in line with Our Values and Code of Conduct

REPLACING FOSSIL FUELS TO REDUCE OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Heat pump and variable refrigerant volume (VRV) projects were successfully completed at our site in Shannon, Ireland in 2022.

Replacing the old heating system with VRV in the main office building significantly reduced the use of fossil fuel, while also lowering operational costs.

USING RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY TO DRIVE EMISSIONS REDUCTION

Solar panels have been fitted at our site in Springs, South Africa (1.5 MW solar panel installation in 2023, in addition to existing 1 MW unit fitted in 2021).

Thanks to this change, the site can now benefit from renewable electricity and emission savings.

REPLACING FOSSIL FUELS WITH COMPRESSOR HEAT RECOVERY

At our site in Burghaun, Germany, the facilities team have utilised waste compressor heat to boost central heating.

Set-up in 2025, this project is expected to recover 200,000 KWh of heat energy and mitigate 20% of the site natural gas usage per year.

LEVERAGING CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY TO REDUCE THE USE OF HYDROGEN FLUORIDE (HF) FOR LEACHING

The closed loop, state-of-the-art HF leaching facility at our site in Shannon, Ireland, reduces the use of HF by 90%, compared to alternative leaching methods.

This delivers both improved product performance as well as dramatically reduced resource consumption.

RE-USING PRODUCTION WASTE IN ROAD SURFACES

At our Global Innovation Centre (GIC) near Oxford, UK, large blocks of granite are used for heavy testing across our Energy, Mining, Road and Wear applications.

The team onsite identified that the granite waste can be re-used in road surfaces. Now 21 tonnes of waste per year are diverted from landfill.
